17 Protecting yourself on Public Transportation

English Transcript (在下方阅读中文视频全文)

DAVID: Thank you, Dr Lio. The next question is, Is it safe to be in an enclosed space and take public transportation? How can we protect ourselves if we must take public transportation?

DR. LIO: You can minimize risk, again, by social distancing rules. For example, while taking the train, make sure there are a couple seats between you and other people. Be careful of what you are touching on the train. Try not to touch anything with your hands. If you’re in an even smaller space like an elevator, that can be trickier. If it’s a small elevator, with more than two people, that might be too much, so I would wait for the next elevator. If it’s a bigger elevator, sometimes you can have like four people. They could stand in all the corners.

But it definitely is a bit of a risk just going outside. I would suggest if you’re at higher risk for getting COVID and for getting severe complications—for example, if you have uncontrolled HIV, if you have cancer, if you’re on any kind of medicines that suppresses your immune system—you should be staying home as much as possible. If there are other people in your family, relatives that can help you out by going out for groceries, then have them do that, but stay home. So yes, you can reduce your risk, but if you are at high risk, don’t go out at all.
