DAVID: Thank you for your answer to that question, Dr. Lio. Can you clarify the terms COVID positive, COVID negative, and COVID immune? Specifically, if I was COVID-positive but I am then cured, do I develop immunity? Can I still give COVID to other people?

DR. LIO: There’s a diagnostic test called PCR, which can tell you if you’re positive or not. Basically, if you test positive that means they detect the virus in you. If it’s negative they don’t detect it. Sometimes there are false negatives. So you might get a PCR test that says you don’t have the virus, but you do. This might happen in maybe 15-20% of the tests.

DR. LIO: With regard to immunity, the PCR test does not tell you whether you have had it in the past and whether you are immune from that. However, if you have had COVID in the past and now are better, we think/hope that you have immunity, but the research is still ongoing. However, if you compare it to other virus infections, such as other coronaviruses, we do know that people have some immunity.
