15 Handling bodies of deceased COVID patients

English Transcript (中文全文在下方阅读)

AMANDA: Alright, thanks very much! Another community member asked: Bodies of deceased COVID patients usually require cremation, but I heard that some of these bodies were buried directly in the ground in New York. Will this cause pollution? So I think the question-asker is referring to contamination or bodies as a source of viral infection.

DR. LIO: There is actually no difference and no recommendations of how to take care of the body after death. It is a myth to assume that the body should be cremated, and that makes it safer. Because it is safe to have the body buried in the ground. The virus basically requires a live body to be able to reproduce itself, otherwise it is just leaving the virus out in the environment, it will die within a few hours or a few days depending on what material is on. The way the virus spread is mostly by droplets, so by speaking, coughing. These things that are propelled from your body out of the air. When someone has already passed away, they are not going to be passing the virus. People who are handling the bodies, they all have protection, and they will be protecting themselves.
