11 Can mosquitoes spread COVID-19?

English Transcript (中文全文在下方阅读)

AMANDA: Alright. And finally, one question-asker says, “I heard that mosquitoes can also transmit COVID-19, and that 50% of the population will carry the virus in the future. Is that true?”

Dr. LIO: So no, we don’t have any evidence of mosquitoes transmitting the disease. There’s definitely a lot of myths floating out there. When you hear something like that, I would double check it with a source that’s reputable so that we’re sure that what we think we believe is actually true. We have seen that there are other animals, though, we recently saw that a couple cats have gotten infected with COVID. So it’s possible that some animals can get it. And so we’re recommended that we treat those the same way we treat humans too, in keeping distance from those, or not touching them, not handling them when we’re sick. So definitely check your facts, make sure you have them right.

With regard to the question about 50% of the population getting it in the end, we hope that doesn’t happen. If that does happen, that means we’re going to have a lot of people in the hospital. Hopefully what will happen is that we keep the numbers down, the numbers of people getting infected down as much as possible, and we have a vaccine. Once the vaccine is effective, and once we have given it to most of the people here in the country, then people don’t have to get infected in the first place to be immune to COVID.
